The following represent questions I’ve been asked most frequently about Bed Aerobics Fitness Flow™ (BAFF)—by my fitness clients, media, and the general public.
Why would exercising in bed be effective?
There are two common reasons people tend to give up on their exercise goals—time and space.
● Time: Many people say they “can’t seem to find the time to exercise” due to endless tasks, work, children and family obligations, medical appointments, etc.
● Space: People say, “I don’t have a gym membership, and the one I have I never use!” Or they don’t have enough room at home and don’t feel comfortable exercising outdoors.
Here’s the bottom line: You can have the best exercise program in the world, but if people can’t find the time or space—or face barriers like travel, cost, certain health conditions, or even appearance concerns—it’s not truly effective. More importantly, it’s not sustainable.
BAFF emphasizes accessibility and convenience by focusing on morning and evening time frames for exercise. This approach removes time and space barriers while also addressing other obstacles such as cost, travel, clothing, hair, and body image.
If you have a bed to wake up and sleep in, you have an opportunity to engage in physical activity that uses your own body weight to build strength, flexibility, and balance.

How can BAFF get me out of bed to move better?
BAFF combines powerful stretch techniques, core strengthening exercises, posture/balance training, and “abundant breathing” for better cardiorespiratory fitness.
Core strength is crucial for everyday activities—lifting heavy objects, engaging in functional daily movements, and maintaining balance to reduce the risk of falls and injuries.
● Static stretching: Holding a stretch to relax muscles and increase flexibility.
● Dynamic stretching: Controlled movement to improve flexibility and endurance.
● PNF stretching: Combining stretching and muscle contractions to improve elasticity and range of motion.

Can you practice BAFF on a floor mat?
While all movements are safe to do on a mat, many practitioners (myself included) find it less comfortable because of the hard surface and the friction from the mat.
With BAFF, it can be helpful to grip the edge of the mattress for stability—something you can’t do on the floor. Also, getting on and off the floor isn’t easy for everyone, especially older adults.
A reasonably firm bed is ideal, as it’s gentler on the joints and fully supports the “ageless fitness starts in bed” approach.
Is it safe to exercise in bed? What about back support?
Always consult your doctor before starting any exercise program, especially if you have current health conditions.
When practicing BAFF:
● Use a mattress that is firm and supportive (avoid sagging or overly plush beds)
● Keep your spine in good alignment to avoid discomfort or injury
Tension vs. Pain:
● Tension in muscles during exercise feels like “Whew!”—normal and productive.
● Pain feels like “Ouch!”—stop immediately.
Listen to your body—it will tell you when to push forward and when to rest.
If any movement causes pain that feels abnormal for your body, stop and consult your doctor.
